Our favourite books

This blog is Day Eight of my 30 days of motherhood blogging challenge. Every day, for 30 days, I’m sharing diary-style snippets of my life as a working mum to one cheeky toddler. Consider this part creative experiment, part self-therapy. Feel free to play along at home! You can read days one to seven here.

I love reading Zoey books (no surprises there, since I’m a bookworm from way back). So far, she seems to love books too, especially ones with animals.

This morning, we visited her baby cousin Georgia and I got bookshelf envy! We’ve got a fair few books but most of them are the classics – think The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Hairy MacLeary etc. I think it’s time to update our collection – what are your favourite children’s books?

Here are our top picks.

Zoey’s favourite books:

  • A Summery Saturday Morning by Margaret Mahy

  • Anything in the Spot series by Eric Hill, e.g. Spot Bakes a Cake, Spot Goes on Holiday and Where’s Spot?

  • Dear Zoo by Rob Campbell

  • Peepo by Janet & Allen Ahlberg

  • A lot of farm-related books that don’t have named authors (mostly pictures!)

My favourite children’s books:

  • Kissed by the Moon by Alison Lester

  • You’re Here for a Reason by Nancy Tillman

  • The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland (mostly because I enjoy putting on the voices in this one, ha!)

Tom’s favourite children’s books:

  • Slinki Malinki by Lynley Dodd

  • Baa Baa Smart Sheep by Mark & Rowan Sommerset

  • Elephant by Lucy Freegard

Not a lot else to report from today. Zoey loved hanging out with her baby cousin this morning (even though I spent most of the playdate saying “be gentle!”). This afternoon’s activities included a trip to the supermarket, colouring in, reading books, and playing peek-a-boo. All in all, a lovely, low-key end to a wonderful four-day weekend.

Back to work and daycare tomorrow. Zoey randomly started talking about daycare at dinner, so I think she’s excited to see all her little friends.
